Scrapbook Terms

  • Acid Free (a/f) - Photo safe object that has a PH of 7.0 or greater.  Acid is used in paper manufacturing to break apart the wood fibers and the lignin which holds them together.  If acid remains in the materials used for photo albums, the acid can react chemically with photos and accelerate their deterioration.  It's imperative that all materials used in scrapbooks are acid free. The adhesive in magnetic albums, for example, is often highly acidic.
  • Lignin Free (L/F)- Substance that binds wood fibers - it yellows in sunlight and heat (newspaper)
  • PVC- Polyvinyl chloride plastic that resembles "shower curtain" smell - emits gases.
  • Memorabilia - Keepsakes that you would like stored in your album.  There are a few ways to add these to your album using pockets or clear compartments.  Keepsakes might include announcements, autographs, awards, certificates, report cards, brochures, drawings, cards, handprints, locks of hair, ticket stubs, etc.
  • Layout - The arrangement of photos and accents on a page that suggests a theme or represents a special event.
  • Journaling - Telling a story about the photographs or layout.  Remember the five W's (who, why, when, where and what). Share those special feelings and stories in your albums; consider using a poem or unique page title.  Generations from now, you will still be there by your words in your albums and people will hear your stories in the scrapbooks you have made.
  • Cropping - cutting out unnecessary backgrounds of a photo; bringing focus of the subject out in the photo.  Consider using duplicates when cropping!  Cropping can help you fit more photos on a page, but remember all photos do not need to be cropped.  Sometimes the background may help explain a period of time, or could show interest to people who want to see grandma's old house, or Dad's first car, etc.
